Karen Braun-Munzinger to succeed Sebastiano Laviola as Director of Resolution Policy Development and Coordination in May
The SRB welcomes the appointment of Karen Braun-Munzinger as Member of the Board and Director of Resolution Policy Development and Coordination, as approved by the European Parliament on 23 April and adopted by the Council of the European Union on 29 April 2024. She will take up her duties on 13 May 2024.
Ms Braun-Munzinger, a German national, joins the SRB from the Deutsche Bundesbank, where she has served as Deputy Director General for Banking and Financial Supervision since 2021. She started her career in financial regulation and financial stability at the UK’s HM Treasury and the Bank of England, then joined the European Central Bank in 2016. Karen holds an M.Sc. in Economics from Birkbeck College and a D.Phil. in Physics from the University of Oxford, which she attended as a Rhodes Scholar.
Ahead of taking up her official duties, Ms Braun-Munzinger said: “I am delighted to join the SRB in this capacity. Preserving financial stability and protecting the taxpayer through orderly resolution is essential to prosperity and well-being. I will put my experience gained at national and European level to work on advancing this mandate within the SRM and beyond.”
Welcoming the appointment, the SRB Chair, Dominique Laboureix said: “Karen brings with her a wealth of experience and will no doubt bring fresh ideas to the SRB. I am confident that the SRB will benefit from her expertise. I would also like to thank Sebastiano for all of his work and achievements over the past five years.”
Recruitment process
The European Commission, in consultation with the SRB, established a shortlist for the position of Member of the Board and Director of Resolution Policy Development and Coordination. The Commission proposed Ms Braun-Munzinger as a candidate to the European Parliament. After the European Parliament gave its approval to the Commission's proposal on 23 April 2024, the Council, acting by qualified majority, adopted the appointment on 29 April 2024.
