Burkhard Balz joined the German centre-right Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) in 1989. He was elected Member of the European Parliament in June 2009 and re-elected for a second term in May 2014, representing the CDU in the largest political group of the European Parliament, the European People's Party (EPP) until August 2018. In the present legislative term Burkhard Balz became Member of the EPP Group Bureau.

Since 2009, he has been a full Member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. After serving as EPP Vice-Coordinator in the Committee for five years, he was appointed EPP Coordinator in July 2014. In this capacity he has acted as the spokesperson for economic and financial services, economic governance and monetary policies as well as on the European framework for competition law and tax policies. In addition to his work on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Burkhard Balz was a substitute Member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Since the 1st of September 2018, Burkhard Balz is a member of the executive board of the German Bundesbank.

His successful career in banking equipped Balz with an in-depth knowledge of the European and global financial markets. Before joining the European Parliament, Burkhard Balz completed a bank apprenticeship and managed the relations with institutional clients, most recently as Vice-President for the Commerzbank AG Hanover branch. Burkhard Balz successfully completed his studies in law at the University of Göttingen.
